Grey Wagtail

The Grey Wagtail is another bird which seems to be much loved by birders in general. They have a stronger affinity to water than do Pied Wagtails, but not entirely so. While they can be seen along most of the streams running through the centre of Sheffield, they can also be seen in town centre settings which are seemingly a good distance from the nearest water source. They can also be found around many of our upland reservoirs and lowland waters - Ladybower, Redmires and RVCP for example. A resident species, they breed in those same localities and possibly never move far away, especially with recent winters being comparatively mild. Redmires, for example usually holds two or three pairs, which can be seen [almost without fail] around one of the conduit inflows alongside the main road. Both of these photographs of the same male were taken by Richard Hill at Redmires, where the bird was feeding on the conduit inflow to the middle reservoir on 31st March 2001.
