Baird's Sandpiper

At the time of writing there has only been one record of Baird's Sandpiper in the Sheffield Bird Study Group recording area. A worn adult was located on the north shore of Barbrook Reservoir on 9th September 1983 and remained until 12th September. It was also the first record for Derbyshire. The species breeds from north-eastern Siberia and eastwards to the extreme north of North America and western parts of Greenland. In Britain, it occurs as a vagrant more-or-less annually in small and varying numbers. The timing of this record coincided with an adult in Cornwall on 14th and subsequently up to 3 juveniles, all in Cornwall and Devon during the remainder of the month. During it's 4 day stay it was often in the company of [up to 7] Little Stints, and on its' final day three observers had 3 Bar-tailed Godwits and 5 Grey Plovers fly through west as they watched the sandpiper. Gone are the days - with the water levels at Barbrook now rarely so attractive to waders. This photographed was taken by Jon Hornbuckle, as the bird was feeding at the waters edge in the early evening sunlight. Last updated 23rd June 2001
