Although the most recent "Survey of Sheffield's Parks, Gardens and Open Spaces" [1995-96] showed Blackbird to be the 7th most abundant species of the Sheffield area, it also showed it to be the most widespread. No change here then from distribution maps in "Birds of The Sheffield Area, .." [1985] where it was seen to be absent only from the highest and barren of our surrounding moorlands. But this is more than just a garden resident. Evidence shows that the species is also a passage and winter visitor to the area. Dip into virtually any of the recent Sheffield Bird Reports ["Birds in the Sheffield area, 1999" for example] and you will see reports of influxes, especially during October and November. Regular observers covering their local patch have seen just a small number of Blackbirds one autumn day, yet 30 or 40 the next. National ringing recoveries indicate that many of these birds are continental migrants. Having said all that ... these photographs of male and female Blackbirds in a High Green garden were taken by Russell Slack in early January 2002. Last updated 15th July 2003.
