Caspian Gull

Photograph Copyright © 2001 Ashley Fisher.
This 1st-winter Caspian Gull, Larus [cachinnans] cachinnans, was photographed at Poolsbrook CP on 1st December 2000. Note the rusty-brown wing coverts, the long, all black bill and the comparatively small, clean head. This is probably the easiest plumage [age] to pick out Caspian. Unlike "Yellow-legged" it gets progressively more difficult as the bird gains maturity. All three photographs were of the same individual, taken by Ashley Fisher. [If seen out of the water, Caspian Gull also looks long-legged and heavy-chested]. To further illustrate the jizz of Caspian here are four low resolution video-grabs of the same bird. Last updated 23rd June 2001.
