Common Gull

Common Gull at Catcliffe Flash, Sheffield, January 2001 - Ashley Fisher
Photograph Copyright © 2001 Ashley Fisher

Despite the name Common Gull is far from common in this area. Regular local gull watchers record all occurrences of the species as a matter of course. It is rare in May and June, small numbers pass  through in spring and autumn, but the winter months are probably best for this species. At this time they can be seen in comparatively small numbers at many local waters and at the winter roosts such as Langsett or Broomhead, which are often the places with the highest numbers. But even then, most counts are under one hundred with three figure totals unusual. This photograph of an adult in winter plumage was taken by Ashley Fisher at an icy Catcliffe Flash on 20th January 2001. Last updated 21st January 2001.
