Common Tern

Adult Common Tern, RVCP, June 2001

In recent years Common Tern has established itself as the most regular to be seen in the Sheffield area. Formerly a spring and autumn passage migrant, since the 1980's it has become more regular and can be seen in most months between April and and October. In recent years it has become a regular breeding species although only in very small numbers. Rafts floated especially to attract breeding Terns have done the trick at Catcliffe Flash and Thrybergh CP at least. This has occurred in line with the expansion of inland breeding records, especially at Midlands and Trent Valley gravel pits etc. On spring and autumn passage it can occur at any of the Rother and Don Valley waters and less commonly at upland reservoirs. Harthill Res, RVCP, Carr Vale, Thrybergh Banks/CP and Old Denaby are all reasonable places to look.  This photograph of a summer plumage adult was taken at Rother Valley Country Park on 23rd June 2001 by Mark ReederLast updated 25th June 2001.
