Dipper

The status of Dipper in the region seems to have changed very little in recent years. They can be seen on most of the fast-flowing streams and rivers to the west of the area, even reaching into suburban Sheffield. On the Porter Brook, for example, there is a regular pair as far in as Summerfield Street, much reported when observers were looking at the Firecrest in February and March 2000. It is also regular further upstream in Endcliffe Park and at Millhouses Park on the River Sheaf. In Derbyshire, spend a few minutes at any of the bridges over the River Derwent and you will have a good chance of seeing one or a pair feeding or perched nearby. Further east, the habitat is less suitable and there are very few records east of the City. Consequently my personal best records of the species were singles on the River Don at Lady's Bridge, in the centre of Sheffield, in September 1993 and exactly a year later at Washford Bridge, Attercliffe, in September 1994. These were my only records of the species during a ten year study of the River Don through old industrial Sheffield, but it does indicate that they can stray away from prime habitat. The above photograph was taken along the Rivelin Valley Nature Trail by Nicolas Chaline in May 2000.

Despite its close proximity to the Rivelin Valley [top] Dipper was very rare at Redmires until recent years. This Dipper [above] at Redmires was found by Dave Wood, on the middle res over-flow next to the pull-in area on 25th October 2001 and remained there for some time afterwards. Being an extreme rarity at Redmires [at the time] it provided a good opportunity for Redmires-listers to catch one up on Richard Hill who recorded the species here some years ago. This shot was taken by Richard on 28th October 2001. Last updated 16th July 2003
