Localities and Habitats - Elsecar Reservoir

Elsecar Res, near Shefield, S.Yorkshire - Ashley Fisher

Elsecar Res, is a bit of an unknown quantity as far as Sheffield birders are concerned. It is another site which lies just inside our northern boundary, north-west of Wentworth and south-east of Hoyland [which is outside the recording area]. Map ref SK382994.  Wildfowl numbers are counted regularly as part of the national Wetland Bird Survey [and previously the National Wildfowl Census], but the regular population is not phenomenal. The locality is capable of turning up the odd surprise, witness the Red Throated Diver in late January-early February 1996 and records of Black-necked Grebe and Great Grey Shrike. It has also hosted every species of tern on the Sheffield list, including the recording area's first White-winged Black Tern in September 1966. In early 1998 a flock of 1200 plovers in surrounding fields included 1000 Lapwings and 200 Golden Plovers. It is fished, probably accounting  for the row of cars in the picture below.  So a site perhaps in need of greater attention.  These photographs were taken by Ashley Fisher in February 2001.  Last updated 25th February 2001.

Take at look at the site data for this locality.
