Grey Heron

This photograph of a Grey Heron, was taken by John Rochester. Grey Heron breeds in the area in small numbers. The largest colony is probably the one in Derwentdale near Ladybower Res, but small numbers are regular at places like Catcliffe Flash, RVCP, Thrybergh Res and Old Denaby, and most of our upland reservoirs get the odd bird or two at various times. The true breeding status is uncertain. Despite it being a large and obvious bird, and a communal breeder at that, it is likely that small 'colonies' of one or two nests are overlooked - it isn't always easy to locate a single nest in some of our dense stands of woodland.
