Great Spotted Woodpecker

Male Great Spotted Woodpecker, RVCP, February 2002 - Doug Chinnery

Great Spotted Woodpecker is the most widespread and numerous of the three woodpeckers resident in the Sheffield area. Although it did not [unsurprisingly] appear in either of the "most abundant" or "most widespread" lists in the "Survey of Parks, Woodlands and Open Spaces, 1995-96", it was never-the-less recorded in 100% of wooded parks and in 94% of woodlands covered by the survey. Thus, there seems to be no reason to suspect any significant change in the status of this species. Apart from the habitats mentioned above, it can and does occur in larger suburban gardens and, unlike the other two woodpeckers of our area, is more catholic in its' choice of habitat and can thus be seen in most woodland types. This photograph of a male was taken by Doug Chinnery on 18th February 2002 as it fed on a peanut feeder at RVCP, where it had been a regular visitor around that time.  Last updated 10th March 2002.
