Lapwing

Lapwing at Thrybergh CP, February 2001

Most people now know the Lapwing story - numbers drastically depleted due to changes in farming practice etc, and, as would be expected, local evidence would suggest that Sheffield is no different from anywhere else. As far back as 1985, "Birds of the Sheffield Area, including the NE Peak District" reported "Numbers breeding in the lowlands have decreased markedly since 1950", and the situation has worsened drastically since then. Most reports of displaying birds are now from rough pasture sites at the moorland fringes, such as Redmires. Post-breeding and wintering flocks can be seen at places such as RVCP, but the days of several thousand in flocks at Brampton Common, Breck Farm and Middleton Moor are long gone. In the Sheffield Bird Report for 1998 for example, post-breeding flocks at Redmires and Middleton Moor were reported as "amongst the lowest on record". The British Trust for Ornithology have recently conducted winter surveys of Lapwing [and Golden Plovers]. This stunning photograph was taken at Thrybergh CP by Ashley Fisher in early February 2001.  Last updated 7th July 2003.
