Little Auk

Little Auk is a rare visitor to the area with only a handful of autumn and winter records. Inland records are generally associated with coastal "wrecks" of the species - large offshore movements during bad weather, especially easterlies as far as Yorkshire records are concerned. Most of our records have been singles, but the largest party was 9 at Carr Vale on 31st October in 1995. This photograph, by Carl Corbidge, shows a bird found on Midhope Res on 30th October in 1988. Sadly, it remained until 2nd November when it was found dead. Unfortunately this is so often the result as these birds are usually in a state of exhaustion.
