Little Ringed Plover

Little Ringed Plover is an uncommon, but regular passage migrant through the SBSG recording area and breeds spasmodically at a small number of sites. A Schedule One breeding species, they can normally be seen from mid-March to mid-August, with the odd straggler lingering until early or mid-October. Many of the later reports may refer to locally bred juveniles, possibly the product of late-breeding pairs. Most reports are from the east, with sewage farms, flashes and waste ground being favoured habitats. The margins of upland reservoirs, when water levels are suitable, and industrial workings such as Middleton Moor lagoons account for most of the more westerly records.  These two photographs of adults were taken by Ashley Fisher on 19th June 2002 [above] and Pete Wragg on 20th June 2002 [below], both on or near potential breeding habitat. Last updated 7th July 2002.
