At Langsett / Midhope: imm male Goshawk, 10 Bullfinch, c.400 Fieldfare, 40 Pink-feet NE at 13.20 and c.90 'geese' flying south at 11.30 but lost in low cloud.

A Pink-footed Goose of unknown origin at Midhope Res [and presumably same at Underbank].

Tuesday 9th March 2004 [AD]
At Midhope: 26 Pink-footed Geese dropped on to the Res briefly before flying to feed in fields on Edgecliff - [these have possibly been in area since early Dec 2003].

From Midhope raptor watchpoint: 3 Goshawks, Merlin, Curlew and Golden Plover calling. At Midhopestones Res: 3 Greylag Geese, 6 Teal and a female Goldeneye.

In the Langsett area: possibly 4 Goshawk between 1045-1130h. Atn Langsett Res: 16 Pink-footed Geese resting and bathing on the Res and a Sparrowhawk over the woods, but very little on the passerine front, with just one Siskin over.

At Low Moor, Upper Midhope: 2 Common Buzzards and a Peregrine. Also a total of c.750 Pink-footed Geese NW between 0940 and 1405h.

At Langsett Res: 24 Teal, 32 Mallard and 24 Pink-footed Geese. And in a small gull roost [by last light]: one Great Black-backed Gull, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 21 Herring Gulls, 4 Common Gulls and 93 Black-headed Gull.

Friday 23rd January 2004 [CC]
A small party of 8 Greylag Geese and one smaller goose [probably Pink-footed] flew south at Midhope.

In the Langsett gull roost: 220 Herring Gull; 55 Great Black-backed Gull; 2 Lesser Black-backed Gull; 50 Black-headed Gull; 5 Common Gull.

Langsett Res: 48 Teal, 3 Tufted Ducks, 2 Goldeneye. Midhope Res: 1 Teal, 1 drake Pochard, 6 Goldeneye. Underbank Res:1 Cormorant, 1 Goosander, 50+ Pied Wagtails, 100+ Carrion Crows (feeding on exposed mussels).

Langsett Res: mixed flock c.20 Coal Tit, c.20 Goldcrest. Midhope Res: 2 Redwings. Midhopestones: mixed flock c.50 Linnet, c.50 Goldfinch.

At Langsett Res: 1 Greenshank, 1 redhead Goosander (prob same as Midhope Res. earlier in the month), 2 Crossbills, 6+ Chiffchaffs and a Spotted Flycatcher. At Midhope Res: 5+ Chiffchaffs.

At Langsett Res: 2 drake Garganey (first record here to my knowledge - MCW), 3 Grey Herons, 9 Tufted Duck. At Midhope Res: a redhead Goosander, 11 Eurasian Teal, 9 Little Grebe, c.500 House Martin, 1 female/imm Redstart. At Underbank Res: 105 Canada Geese, 3 Grey Heron.

At Langsett: a Red Kite, at first outside the area towards Hartcliff Hill, but drifted over to Upper Midhope then lost heading out over the moors, 1730h [no obvious wing-tags]; a distant harrier sp towards Mickleden was probably a Marsh Harrier; one Common Buzzard. This record shot of the Red Kite shows it interacting with a corvid, which was apparently not a Raven.

Midhope Res: 2 Goldeneye, 1 Coot (first back). Midhopestones: 10 Curlew, 6 Lapwing on breeding territories, 1 singing Skylark - all first spring records - [nothing four days ago] [MCW]. At Midhopestones: one Brambling over. At Langsett Res: 3 Teal; only a small gull roost of c.350 Black-headed Gulls, c.10 Common Gulls, and one Herring Gull; 3 Lesser Black-backed Gulls through; 2 Raven and a Peregrine over at dusk; a flock of 10 Curlews making repeated passes of the res at dusk, and several attempts to land in the middle of the res with the gulls, were presumably the same as those at Midhope, above [Ed]. [AD].

No sign of the Caspian Gull at Langsett this evening, but a first-winter Yellow-legged Gull in the roost. This could possibly represent either the third or fourth bird from the Yellow-legged Gull / Caspian Gull complex over the Christmas period to date - the first-winter Caspian, and adult Yellow-legged or Caspian [or both] and now a first-winter YLG.

The first-winter Caspian Gull again in the Langsett Res roost tonight, plus c.400 Herring Gull, c.1300 Black-headed Gulls, c.200 Common Gulls, c.40 Great Black-backed Gulls, c. 5 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and an adult Kittiwake, plus what was probably an adult Yellow-legged Gull.

The first-winter Caspian Gull in the gull-roost at Langsett from 1540h. Also: c.250 Herring Gulls, c.15 Great Black-backed Gulls, c.10 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and 50+ Common Gulls. In addition, after scrutinising photographs, another bird present in the roost was possibly an adult Caspian Gull.

A first-winter Caspian Gull in the roost at Langsett Res this evening, along with: 700 Black-headed Gulls, 230 Herring Gulls, 75 Common Gulls, 10 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and 10 Great Black-backed Gulls. Also at Langsett, one Goosander with another 13 at Broomhead Res.

In the gull roost at Langsett: Lesser Black-backed Gull - 90; Herring Gull - 9; Common Gull - 60; Black-headed Gull - 1300. There were no Great Black-backed Gulls. In addition: Greylag Geese - 9.

At Barnside Moor: at least one Hobby, a Peregrine, a Common Buzzard, a juv Marsh Harrier (presumably the same that has been hanging around since at least the 18th), one Goshawk (prob same as since the 15th), 2 Sparrowhawks, 3+ Kestrels and 2 Ravens. At Midhope Res: 1 Teal and a [dubious - ed]  Barnacle Goose. [all MCW].
In addition, Birdnet reported at Midhope: 50 Common Crossbills, 2 Hen Harriers, 3 Peregrines and 2 Spotted Flycatchers.

At Langsett Res: an adult Little Grebe + 2y; 66 Canada Geese including broods of 6y+2y+4y; one Barnacle Goose of dubious origin; 11 Tufted Duck; 6 Common Sandpipers. At Upper Midhope:- c.700 Swifts west, including a flock of c.80. At Midhope Res:- 78 Canada Geese; 11 Little Grebe including broods of 2y+3y+1y+1y. At Midhopestones:- 11 Tree Sparrows feeding in crops with c.40 House Sparrows.

At Langsett Reservoir, pick of the afternoon were: Curlew, Common Buzzard, a young Cuckoo being fed by Meadow Pipits, one Ring Ouzel, a juvenile Peregrine and 2 Common Sandpipers. Also: 5 Kestrel (at one time above the moor hunting), 5+ Meadow Pipits, 4 Red Grouse around American Farm ruins, juv Robin, Little Grebe with chick, plus Chiffchaff, Goldcrest, Song Thrush and Willow Warbler. In addition, reports of Goshawk and a party of Crossbills during the morning. [D.Chinnery].

At Langsett Res: a pair of Pochard. At Midhope Res: a pair of Teal (looked like they were doing something?). At Midhopestones:  6 pairs Lapwing on territory (an increase - but nowhere near compensating for Low Moor at Upper Midhope where there is just 1 bird [c.6 pairs last year - c.40 pairs in mid-1980's]. Best sighting of the day was a Noctule Bat feeding over Midhope Res at 1500h.

A rough estimate of the gull roost at Langsett [ viewed from the dam wall at dusk]: c.400 Black-headed Gulls, 60+ Common Gulls and 30+ unidentified large gulls.

A ringtail Hen Harrier over Pike Low late afternoon, and at the Langsett gull roost: c.100 Common Gulls, c.100 Black-headed Gulls, but no large gulls whatsoever.

Sunday 3rd February 2002 [AD]
As well as 8 Pintail (3 males and 5 females} and 13 Teal a small gull roost included: c.700 Black-headed Gulls, c.150 Common Gulls, c.180 Herring Gulls, c.12 Great Black-backed Gulls and 7 Lesser Black-backed Gulls. In the poor weather conditions recently, Broomhead has been used and is often the bigger roost in those conditions.

Tuesday 29th January 2002
At Langsett Res: 7 Greylag Geese, c.100 Woodpigeon roosting. No large numbers in the gull roost and small gulls were particularly scarce [most were at Broomhead this evening [RSS]. The winds were gale force yet again and this probably contributed to the low numbers: 260 Black-headed Gulls, 344 Herring Gulls, 91 Common Gulls, 25 Great Black-backed Gulls, 5 Lesser Black-backed Gulls and a first-winter Iceland Gull which came in at 1535h.

At Langsett Res: 2 Goosander including on e male, 94 Mallard, 5 Tufted Duck, 1 male Pochard, 2 Goldeneye including one male. At Midhopestones: a flock of c.200 Starlings.

At Midhope Res: 3 Goldeneye including 2 males [MCW]. An adult Mediterranean Gull in the roost at Langsett again, but the Iceland Gull did not appear here this evening [per Birdnet].

Saturday 26th January 2002 [KC per RSS]
At Langsett Res: a first winter Iceland Gull dropped in to roost at 1700h after leaving west from Broomhead 25 minutes earlier. Also:  a first-winter Glaucous Gull and an adult Mediterranean Gull. No other roost figures available at present.

Langsett Reservoir: 7 Greylag Geese; 7 Tufted Duck; 3 (including 2 male) Goldeneye; 71 Mallard; 11 Teal.

Wednesday 16th January 2002
Langsett Reservoir: 41 Teal, 29 Mallard and 2 male Tufted Duck. In the gull roost: 3872 Black-headed Gull, 1078 Herring Gull, 402 Common Gull, 39 Great Black-backed Gull, 6 Lesser Black-backed Gull and 2 adult Kittiwakes which came in half an hour apart.  A female Goshawk was hunting the roost but did not make a kill. Also at dusk 1 Tawny Owl and 1 Woodcock.

Midhope Reservoir - 1 Snipe, 2 Goldeneye, Tufted Duck, 6 Teal, 16 Canada Geese. At Langsett Res: 2 Ruddy Ducks may be a first for the site, also a Green Woodpecker; only a small gull roost - c.900 Black-headed Gulls, c.100 Common Gulls, c.30 Herring Gulls, 9 Great Black-backed Gulls.

At Langsett: a male Goldeneye. And in the gull roost: 6 Great Black-backed Gulls, 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 97 Herring Gulls, 83 Common Gulls, c.300 Black-headed Gulls, and a michahellis Yellow-legged Gull, but beware at least one white headed argentatus Herring Gull also present!
