To the old wildfowlers and, in recent times, avid inland Goose-watchers, high pressure days with clear blue skies in autumn or winter are known as Goose days because of the potential for goose movements. Pink-footed Geese which winter on the Wash and in Morcambe Bay have a tendency to move from one to the other on such days. In the  Sheffield and surrounding areas autumn movement tends to be from west to east and at the other side of the new year, mostly east to west. In most years there are marked periods of such passage. For example, more than 2000 moved east over the Sheffield area alone on the weekend of 27th/28th October 2001. A keen eye is required, as many of the skeins are very high. The accompanying photographs, all taken by Richard Hill on 28th October 2001, will hopefully portray some of the magic of witnessing such an event. Last updated 28th October 2001
