Red Grouse

Photograph Copyright © John Rochester
One of the most common birds on the moors around Sheffield is the Red Grouse. The species' status is closely linked with active moorland management. A survey in the mid-1990's undertook to assess the impact of raptors on Red Grouse numbers. The results of the survey, although not straight-forward, were not entirely what bird-watchers wanted to hear. Whatever, no matter what your feelings on the subject, our Grouse populations would not be what they are were it not for the existence of moorland managed for Grouse breeding and, of course, shooting. An emotive subject to say the least !! The photograph of an adult male [above] was taken on the Derwent moors by John Rochester. The sexing of lone birds, especially in winter, is not always straight forward. Despite having a hint of red above the eye, the winter plumaged bird below [photographed by Carl Corbidge at Broomhead moor in November 2000] is possibly a female. Last updated 29th December 2000
