Localities and Habitats - Redmires

Photograph Copyright © K.Clarkson
Redmires doesn't exist. Or at least there is no area of Sheffield with such a name. But local birders know the three reservoirs and the surrounding countryside by that abbreviated term. To the west of Sheffield on the moorland fringe, it has been well watched over the years and is one of the most consistently watched localities in the SBSG area. It is, however, regularly recorded by only a handful of birders. This may well be because Redmires can appear, and often is, bleak and birdless. Only with continued visits over many years is it possible to build up a decent site list of around 160 or more species of bird. This is quite a low total compared to the younger RVCP over to the east of the area. But that is the very nature of an upland reservoir where, for example, the number of breeding species is low but can include some of the more enigmatic moorland species. Being situated on higher ground on the moorland fringe does make the site one of the best for counting visible migration, with autumn migrants often flying through in their thousands.
The above photograph of Redmires Reservoirs was taken by Dr Keith Clarkson from a balloon in late September 1987. So ..... why was KC ghosting around in a balloon over Redmires ?
Take a look at the regular site data for this locality at Redmires Data or within the Visible Migration page.
