A count of 30 Waxwings to roost at 1535h. Cormorant - one on bottom res.

Saturday 20th November 2004
Top two resvs, 0730-0900h, 3 inches snow, cloudy and -1degC [B.Lowndes]: Woodcock flushed in plantation by mid res; 12 Lapwing. Similar finches to yesterday: c.40 Chaffinch, 5 Brambling, c.25 Goldfinch, 2 Greenfinch, c.20 Siskin, 2 pairs Bullfinch. A Great Spotted Woodpecker, 4 Wren, 2 Coal Tit, 1 Redhead Goldeneye, 6 Waxwing overhead towards Conduit, a Kestrel, 11 Black-headed Gulls. A small number of thrushes - 2 Redwings, 3 Mistle Thrush, 6 Fieldfare.
And late afternoon [AD]: 4 Goosander, Ringtail Hen Harrier and 20+ Bramblings. A party of 11 Waxwings over plantations, dropped into Spruce by Conduit at 1550h to roost.

Friday 19th November 2004 [B.Lowndes]
On circuit of top two reservoirs, 1400-1530h, 3 inches snow + sunshine.
Finches included - c.20 Chaffinch, 7 Brambling, c.20 Goldfinch, c.25 Siskin and 2 Redpoll. Also: a pair of Reed Buntings, 19 Black-headed Gulls, 3 Goldeneye [an adult male + 2 redheads], 7 Waxwings in plantation below mid res, one Kestrel.

Skeins of 100 + 20 Pink-footed Geese SE at 0850 at 0900; a Cormorant; and 80+ Brambling west.

[Top Resv + Conduit + Plantation, 0800-0930h] (A fine morning spoilt by too many dogs]
Counts of: 280 Woodpigeon, 65 Fieldfare, 35 Chaffinch, 6 Brambling, pair Greenfinch over, pair Linnet over, 3 Meadow Pipit, pair Bullfinch, 1 Skylark, 1 Great Spotted Woodpecker, lots Coal Tit, 6 Goldcrest, few Blue and Great Tit, Pied Wagtail.

A Ringtail Hen Harrier and a male Ring Ouzel over.

Tuesday 26th October 2004 [DWo / M.Timms]
An hour this morning produced lower numbers of thrushes and Woodpigeons than Sunday morning but a Hawfinch went over low W calling repeatedly with a small party of Fieldfares at 0805h [DWo]. And this afternoon: at least 4 Brambling in a mixed flock of finches, tits, crests etc, in Fairthorn Plantation by top res, 1600h. Also a male Stonechat along the conduit path [M.Timms].

A redhead Goldeneye and a Common Gull on the middle res. Visible Migration-wise: 2000+ Woodpigeon south. Plus: 300+ Fieldfare, 180 Brambling, 200+ Starling and 80 Lesser Redpoll, all west.

Deadly early on due to fog but once this cleared: 3 Shelduck west; 1 Peregrine; a Cormorant south; 2000 Redwing N or NE, 170 Wood Pigeons NE; 50 Fieldfare NE, a Yellowhammer south; and another unseen Rock/Water Pipit south.

Sunday 3rd October 2004 [RDH]
A Rock Pipit on bottom dam wall plus another unseen Rock/Water south. Also: 110 Linnets south; 150 Meadow Pipits south; 80 Chaffinches west; 40 Greenfinch west; 40 Siskin west; 5 Grey Wagtails SW and 3 Swallow south.

Saturday 11th September 2004 [RDH]
A Fieldfare at Soughley Lane, still present Sunday 12th. This was the observers 2nd earliest arrival date for this species. A sub-adult Cormorant on the bottom res; c.100 hirundines and 50 Meadow Pipits all SW.

Wednesday 1st September 2004 [AD]
Grasshopper Warbler - 1; Whinchat - a juv middle Res; Raven - 7 over; Merlin - along "Conduit"; Spotted Flycatcher - still feeding juvs. Also: 1 Speckled Wood, 1 Painted Lady, 3 Red Admiral, 6 Small Copper, several Wall Brown, good nos Black darter, 6 Common Hawker and a 1 Southern Hawker.

Monday 23rd August 2004 [B.Steel]
A Red Kite flew south and then east over the res in poor weather, 1600h

Juvenile Merlin honing it's hunting skills over middle and top reservoirs.

Tuesday 10th August 2004 [DW].
An extremely moist day but the poor overnight weather produced the goods around Sheffield generally. Birds of the day were arguably 2 Great Skuas which circled Redmires before drifting off NW between 1525 to 1530h. These were presumably the same as 2 which left north from Carsington Water mid-afternoon.

Monday 19th July 2004 [RDH]
Tufted - 12 [a build up of moulting birds in the last week]; Lapwing - 27; Yellow-legged Gull - 1 moulting ad left to N at 0826h; Sand Martin - 8 south; Yellow Wagtail - a juv on top dam wall.

A single male Common Scoter on the top res this evening.

Two pairs of Common Redstarts bred, along with Grey Wagtail and Lesser Redpoll, both of which seen with fledged young today.

Pink-footed Goose - the feral bird still present; Wigeon - a male on middle res in afternoon and a female briefly; Lapwing 1pr + 2 yng; Lesser Black-backed Gull - 6 N; Wheatear - 5 [an influx].

Sunday 25th April 2004 [RDH]
Oystercatcher - 1 in fields on Roper Hill; Wheatear - a male on Roper Hill.
In addition - during a local field trip at Redmires/Hallam Moors, a pair of drumming Snipe, 2 territorial Golden Plover, a male Wheatear, singing Redstart, good numbers of Red Grouse, Lapwing and Skylark, several displaying Curlew, and single Redshank and Dunlin at the middle res. Also Stoat, 3 all-white Mountain Hares and a Lizard [DW}

Shelduck - 4 on middle res this morning; Goldeneye - 2; Wigeon - 1 male; Cormorant - a sub-adult; Common Redstart - 1 male; Stonechat - a pair by Fairthorn Plantation.

A male Wigeon, 56 Canada Geese, the single Pink-footed Goose [of dubious origin], a Goldeneye, 20 Lapwing, 3 Curlews and 120 Golden Plover.

Friday 26th March 2004 [CPF]
At the Res and along the conduit this afternoon [brief 30 min visit]: 2 Lapwings on territory, female Goldeneye, 2 Mistle Thrush, 3 Goldcrest, 2 male Pheasants.

A single Oystercatcher late this afternoon, and 3 Goldeneye. 

Thursday 18th March 2004 [DW]
On the Res: 3 Tufted Duck (the first of spring) and a pair Goldeneye. And on fields south of the Res: 205 Golden Plover and 11 Curlew.

Two Moorhen at Redmires by the middle res.

Ringtail Hen Harrier over top res late morning. And in fields south of the res: 300 Starling, 120 Golden Plover, 80 Lapwing and 8 Curlew.

A first-winter Whooper Swan on middle Res this morning. And nearby, in fields at Soughley Lane, at least 80 Fieldfares, 70 Lapwing and 2 Golden Plover.
Of interest: [according to a dog walker] there were 5 'swans' on Weds 10th, presumably also this species.

Canada Geese - 63; Barnacle - one still present; Goldeneye - 6; a Treecreeper feeding in the stone conduits by the middle res.

Saturday 21st February 2004 [S. Draper]
A wandering Barn Owl flew down the line of the Stanage track along the plantation edge and perched in tree near corner of top res at 1400h.

This morning: Canada Goose - 50; Barnacle Goose - 1 still present; Pink-footed Goose - 1 [of dubious origin] with the Canada Geese; Common Buzzard - one east at 0950h; Lapwing - c.70 on Roper Hill; Golden Plover - 12 with the Lapwings; Goldeneye - 3.

Sunday 15th February 2004 [DW]
A Barnacle Goose with 34 Canada Geese, 124 Lapwing came into roost, 95 Fieldfares flew W to roost and 3 Goldeneye, including one male.

Mallard - 54; Goldeneye - 3; Teal - 5; Tufted Duck - 2; Waxwing - 3 flew west to roost; Kestrel - 6; Sparrowhawk - 1; only small numbers of finches to roost.

Also: [DW] A walk along the conduit this afternoon failed to produce any signs of a Great Grey Shrike, but there was a Little Owl in the field just below the first gate along the conduit, either using or inspecting rabbit burrows! It spent all its time on the deck, hopping along or flying a short distance before coming down again. A couple of Mistle Thrushes were hassling it, which was what drew attention to it. Also good views of a Water Vole. Seven Tufted Duck on the middle res and 55 Canada Geese on the top res.

Five Goldeneye plus: 18 Teal, 30 Mallard, 50 Canada Geese and up to 150 Lapwing. Plus 2 Great Spotted Woodpeckers moved west together but may have gone down in the top plantation [DW].

All on the middle res: 20 Teal, 3 Pochard and a Wigeon.

A Goldeneye on middle res and 30+ Fieldfare in fields below Roper Hill.

Saturday 1sth November 2003 [RDH, AD, KC, et al]
A total of 16 Whooper Swans during the morning as follows: there were 6 ads on the Middle Res when RDH arrived at 0750h, 4 more ads arrived from the SW at 0755 and they were still present when RDH left; at 0815 another 6 circled the south side of the middle res before continuing SE. A day count of 16 is a record for the locality. Also over, were c.750 Pink-footed Geese in 10 skeins, all flying SE or E. Other than that: c.1000 Woodpigeon south, 50 Starlings west and 4 Blackbirds high to the SE. KC also recorded the PFG's from Rod Moor/Strines and 2 ringtail Hen Harrier's over the back of Ocean View. A ringtail Hen Harrier in to roost at 1645h [AD] may have been one of the Ocean View birds.

Hen Harrier - a juvenile seen close in; Peregrine - 1; Pink-footed Geese - c. 100 E in skeins of 20 and 80; Goldeneye - 1 redhead; Lapwing - 150+; Golden Plover - 130 in fields at Roper Hill; Woodpigeon - 1000 S; Fieldfare - 130 S.

A ringtail Hen Harrier dropped in to roost at 1740h, and a 2nd-year Herring Gull in the roost.

All either south or SE: Fieldfare - c.380; Redwing - c.170; Song Thrush - 3; Reed Bunting - 2; Rock Pipit - 1; Woodpigeon - c.320; Brambling - 1; Skylark - 3; Siskin - c.15. And apart from the visibly migrating: Peregrine - 1; Golden Plover - 2 [MG].

Thursday 16th October 2003 [RDH]
Nine Wigeon [a male and 8 females], plus 2 Rock Pipits NE. Next to no visible migration due to fog etc but 70 Fieldfare, 50 Redwing, 12 Blackbirds and 5 Song Thrushes, all present and amounting to a thrush influx.

Sunday 12th October 2003 [RDH+DW]
PFG - 15 WNW at 0955h; Dipper - 1; Lapwing - 160; BHG - 50; Cormorant - 1. Passerine migration included: Redwing - 80 SW; Fieldfare - 25 west; Brambling - 20 SW; Reed Bunting - 5 WNW; Rock Pipit - 1 WNW at 0820h [RDH]. In addition this morning: 178 Lapwing and a Rock Pipit over [DW].  A total of 42 Common Gulls through in morning and evening visits [12 and 28 respectively] [RDH].

This morning [RDH]: PFG - c.800 E/ESE in 9 skeins between 0825-0955h; Woodpigeon - 250 south; Collared Dove - 4 west; Skylark - 85 south was the highest count for some years; Meadow Pipit - 100 south; Swallow - 1 SW; House Martin - 7 SE; Song Thrush - 3 west; Redwing - 9 west; Fieldfare - 2 west; Starling - 46 west; Jackdaw - 32 SW: Chaffinch - 160 west; Greenfinch - 305 west [a record count]; Brambling - 60 west; Linnet - 50 south; Siskin - 35 west; Goldfinch - 18 south; Lesser Redpoll - 12 SW; Reed Bunting - 8 west or NW; Yellowhammer - 1 south; House Sparrow - 1 SW.  It was also quite productive this afternoon [DW] with: 3 adult Whooper Swans on the middle res from1530h to dusk at least, a Short-eared Owl hunting, a Common Buzzard east, 3 Yellow-legged Gulls [2 adults and a third year], and a Cormorant.

Dunlin - 4 (Very poor photographs of a bird with an apparently white rump [below left] shows the bird to have braces, which Curlew Sandpiper would never show. At least two of the birds also appear to have very long bills [below right]).  Also: Pied Wagtail - 10+; Willow Warbler - 2+ calling; Magpie - 2; Black-headed Gull - 7, all moved off by early afternoon; Lesser Black-backed Gull - none until 1440h when c.20 dropped in from the east.

A bit of a wader day: a juvenile Sanderling early afternoon at least, 2 Dunlin, 3 Common Sandpipers, at least one Redshank and 3 Lapwings all on the middle res shore and 3 Whimbrel flew west at 1357h as the cloud cover was lifting. Also: 2 Stonechats [1 juv] near the hide, 3 adult Tufted Ducks included a female with 5 well grown young, 29 Black-headed Gulls by 1515h and increasing, 13 Lesser Black-backed Gulls by 1515h and increasing, 12+ Mallard, 16 Canada Geese flew on at 1425h, 10+ Swallows, a Yellow Wagtail on the middle res shore briefly and a Pied Wagtail.

A party of 10 drake Common Scoters on the middle res this morning and still present mid-afternoon at least.

A second summer Yellow-legged Gull perched on the middle res gantry at 1700h, then flew off NW with an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull at 1715h.

Two singing Sedge Warblers was unprecedented, plus one Little Grebe, a Moorhen with one young, a Tufted Duck with 1 young and a Nuthatch calling.

Saturday 22nd / Sunday 23rd June 2002 [RDH]
A singing male Sedge Warbler [both days]; 130 adult Canada Geese + 6 broods of 31 young; a Moorhen with 1+ young; small numbers of Black-headed Gulls and Lesser Black-backed Gulls starting to move SW. What was probably 6 (distant) Crossbills west on 22nd, though not 100% certain.

A female Merlin through this evening, at least one Short-eared Owls and 4 Swallows.

A Bar-tailed Godwit flew in from the west, circled and left west again at 0920h; and a Short-eared Owl.

A single Swallow WNW at 1100h; at least 3 Curlews including one which flew low towards Soughly Lane; a pair of Tufted Duck on bottom Res; a male Wigeon; one Grey Heron;  5+ Meadow Pipits and 11+ Canada Geese.

Breeding species this morning: 6 Lapwings in Hammond's Fields, including one chasing off attendant Carrion Crow; 4 Mistle Thrushes possibly from 3 pairs/territories; male Grey Wagtail feeding near traditional territory; 5+ singing male Chaffinches,

Two Wigeon [a pair], 31 Redwings and 76 Canada Geese, the highest ever spring count here. Also, a  Crossbill at Fairthorn Plantation.

A Short-eared Owl quartering the scrub/moor, and 2 Curlew over the middle res.

Sunday 24th March 2002 [DWo, MM]
Four Raven, 120 Fieldfare, a pair of Goldeneye, and a pair of Wigeon. A count of 45 Greenfinches flew to roost.

Saturday 23rd March 2002 [RDH]
This morning: 8 Curlew, a male Goldeneye, one Sparrowhawk, 100+ Starlings, 9 Redwing, 2 Grey Heron and 4 Snipe. In the evening: a Short-eared Owl, 250 Fieldfare flew SW to roost, 11 Pied Wagtails indicated an influx, and 2 Black-headed Gulls.

Eight Curlew, 2 Goldeneye, 15+ Meadow Pipits north and up to 2 Short-eared Owls at various times during the day. This afternoon: a ringtail Hen Harrier in to roost was probably a first-winter male.

This morning: 4 Goldeneye included 2 displaying males, 50 Lapwing, a Cormorant flew off east and 14 Canada Geese.

A juvenile Hen Harrier roosted in foul weather conditions - it appeared to be one of the same juvs as last year, with pale upper-wing patches and looks like a grey male at distance, but isn't.
