Ringed Plover

The status of Ringed Plover in the Sheffield area reads "passage migrant and casual breeder". Breeding, however, really is spasmodic. The first attempts were in 1978 and 1979, but there were no others until 1989. Then, after a steady spell of breeding in 4 of the 5 years from 1989 to 1993, there were no more attempts until 2000. As a passage migrant there are two obvious peaks of movement: a sharp peak in May and a broader autumn peak, in August and September. Although Ringed Plovers can be seen at any time between March and November, there are very few June records, apart from in breeding years. The earliest reports are usually in March and the latest normally in October. Winter records are extremely rare. Most reports are of singles or small parties of single figure proportion, but there have been a handful of parties of more than 20 or so. The largest single party to date was 48 at Redmires on 17th August 1970. A total of 63 passed through Middleton Moor during August of 1993, with a peak of 26 through [in small parties] on 8th August alone.
The top photograph, of a poorly marked [probably adult] female, was taken by Ashley Fisher at Aldwarke SF on 19th June 2002. The adult below was one of 2 by the River Rother at Treeton photographed by Pete Wragg on 20th June 2002. Last updated 7th July 2002.
