Robin

There is a tendency for our most common birds to be under-recorded and Robin is no exception. However, there is nothing to suggest that the population in Sheffield is anything other than stable. Everyone knows what a robin looks like, although some might be surprised to learn that the species isn't so mild-tempered as their 'Christmas card image' would have us believe. They are strongly territorial and will protect their patch with ferocity. In addition, outside the breeding season, both male and female will each hold separate [winter] feeding territories. At this time of year both sexes will sing, and will do so at dusk and even after dark, this behaviour giving rise to spurious claims of Nightingales. The very obliging character above, photographed by Chris Sykes of Sheffield 8, first made an appearance in his garden in June 1999 as a fledgling and became very tame, feeding from a dish placed on the back doorstep. The bird was not seen after 4th January 2001, which is probably around the average life-span of many birds of this size. Last updated 28th January 2001.
