Rock Pipit

Rock Pipit, Redmires, Sheffield, October 2003 - Richard Hill

Rock Pipit occurs in very small numbers but more-or-less annually in the Sheffield area, mostly in October or November, rarely in March/April. Consequently, as a regular Visible Migration watch-point, Redmires has probably produced most individuals, with Barbrook [Res], RVCP and Thrybergh CP in close contention. Many records involve birds flying straight through [on Visible Migration watches] although this isn't always the case, as can be seen by the above photograph by Richard Hill, of a bird perched amongst the rocks at the foot of the dam wall at Redmires on 4th October 2003. To create a little confusion, we also get the occasional record of the Scandinavian race of Rock Pipit Anthus petrosus litteralis which, in autumn, can be difficult to differentiate from Water Pipit.
