Although the Ross's Gull had been present
at Scarborough since 16th March [2002], work and family commitments prevented me
from going for it until the 20th. I called in at Sherburn on the way and walked
down the track at the side of the Ward's factory to a conifer wind-belt to look
for the small party of Crossbills that had been there for a couple of days. I
was lucky enough to get good views of a fine red male at the top of a tree -
unfortunately I'd left my camera in the car!
The Ross's gull showed well on the rocks below Marine Drive before flying to the
children's playground behind the cafe to feed but it spent most of the next hour
loafing on the rocks. This was my third Ross's gull - my first in Sunderland was
the most impressive - the second in Galway was a winter plumaged bird and more
flighty.
After having my fill of the Gull, I went to the Burton Riggs reserve ( the former Seamer gravel pits) where I got my first singing Chiffchaff of the year and a Glaucous Gull. The rest of the day was spent at Filey and Bempton which yielded a variety of year ticks but nothing special. Nevertheless a fine sunny day, blue skies, blue sea and some good Yorkshire birds. What more can one ask for?
