Short-eared Owl

Photograph Copyright © Richard D Hill
Although not the most abundant of our owls Short-eared Owl is possibly the easiest to see in our area, mainly due to it being the most likely to fly in daylight hours. The distribution, however, is probably the most restricted and numbers of breeding birds fluctuate considerably. Breeding on the western and northern moorlands of Sheffield, in good years there can be pairs at numerous suitable localities and they are well recorded as they move into some of the more easily viewed locations. In poor years, there may be only one or two pairs, and these on the less accessible moorlands where they are less likely to be observed and reported. These photographs were taken by Richard Hill, in July 2001. Last updated 6th October 2001
