Snipe can be seen at many of our wetland sites, although not as numerous in recent years. At Redmires, where up 30 or more used to gather in autumn, there are now very few. Recently published national data reflects this evidence, with a 74% decline in numbers indicated between 1970-1999. Most drumming birds are recorded at upland localities, such as Redmires, but the best places in spring and autumn are lowland localities such as RVCP, Carr Vale, Poolsbrook Marsh and Woodhouse Mill [Washlands].
