Species recorded in the Sheffield Bird Study Group area.

This list includes all species known to have occurred in the SBSG recording area since 1960. The status and likelihood of finding the species in the field, is indicated for each of the four seasons using the following abbreviations:

A = Abundant - present in preferred habitat, often in large numbers.
C = Common - present in preferred habitat in smaller numbers which may vary considerably.
U = Uncommon - less frequent in preferred habitat, usually in low numbers.
S = Scarce - occurs in small numbers in most years.
R = Rare - not recorded annually [includes vagrants recorded once or on very few occasions].
B = Breeds annually.
b = Casual breeder.
x = Former breeder but no longer breeds or breeds spasmodically at best.
E = Escape - most likely of recent captive origin, though for some species, may include wandering
                    feral individuals raised in the wild, or genuine wild birds.

Approximate Seasonal periods
Spring, late March - early June
Summer, June - July
Autumn, August - October
Winter, November - mid March

For most of the rarer species, a figure for the number of individuals recorded in the area up to the end of 2001 is given. Where a single record represents a significant number of these individuals, the largest flock size is given in parentheses. Also given is the year of the most recent occurrence [in square brackets] or, in the case of the rarest species, all of the years in which the species has been recorded.

Species first recorded after 2001 are included for completeness, but it should be noted that admission of these species on to the Sheffield area list is subject to acceptance by the relevant committees. Some [known] records for 2002 and 2003 have been included, but the lists will be properly updated for these years in due course.

The table is split into sections as follows:

Divers to Herons
Swans to Ducks
Raptors to Crane
Waders including Phalaropes
Skuas to Auks
Doves to Woodpeckers
Larks to Thrushes
Warblers to Shrikes
Crows to Buntings
