Localities and Habitats - Stubley Hollow

Photograph Copyright © Jim Sherwin
Stubley Hollow is an area of farmland lying to the south of the wood at the Dore and Totley golf course and to the north of Dronfield Woodhouse. It is bisected from west to east by a small stream which frequently dries up completely in summer. Four farms work the land - Barnes, Upper Birchett, Bowshaw and Stubley Hollow - although the bulk of the patch comes within Barnes farm. The land is turned over to cereal and grass for silage as well as beef grazing. The area is typical of many similar farmland localities in the area, like those in the Moss Valley for example, with a few remnants of mature hedgerow. The area is probably best for species such as Little Owl, the winter thrushes, finches and buntings at the relevant times of year. The area may be viewed from Barnes Lane to the west of the area, and public footpaths which border the western and southern boundaries of the golf course. The eastern area may be viewed from the path which goes from Stubley to Bowshaw. Last updated 29th June 2003
