Major excitement centred around the discovery of a very large, noisy and obvious hoverfly, feeding on Creeping Thistle, which turned out to be Volucella inanis [below] - a first for Rotherham.

This morning: 12 Heron, 28 Cormorants loafing on the mud, 3 Teal [2m1f], a fem Tufted Duck with 5 young, 4 Ruddy Duck [3m1f], one Redshank, 7 Ringed Plovers, 2 Little Ringed Plovers and 2 Common Terns, 2 singing Reed Warblers and c.70 Swifts; a Cuckoo flew over the main lake into marsh at 1030h, and 2 Turtle Dove SE at 1050h.

This morning: a Green Sandpiper for 10 minutes between 0730 to 0740h, 5 Ringed Plover included a party of 4 NE at 0830h, 2 Little Ringed Plovers, a Common Tern, 19 Cormorant, 9 Tufted Duck, 3 Ruddy Duck, a Kingfisher and a single Red Admiral butterfly.
