A downy young Lapwing at the pond on the Forgemasters Tip, Treeton.
Good to know that Lapwing are still breeding here, in what is now effectively
wet woodland. This is also a comparatively late date for a downy chick

The only birds of note were a Common Tern and 4 small Mute Swan
cygnets. Possibly the first ever record of breeding Red-eyed Damselflies
at this locality. They were in south-west corner of Dyke on large patch of
Amphibious Bistort, but not easy to see. "I picked them out by scanning through
the large number of Blue Damsels with a 'scope".
A list of dragonflies etc seen here today, including
photographs, is on the dragonflies 2003 page.

Wednesday 30th April 2003 [P.Moulam]
The Osprey still at Treeton Dyke and roosted in Hail Mary Wood this
evening.
Monday 28th April 2003
An Osprey high in front of the water skiing clubhouse at 1910h. Managed
to take some very distant flight shot. On one occasion the Osprey dropped on the
water at the NW corner and seemed to catch something, but after at least 30
seconds spread-eagle on the water was unable to lift it, and aborted the
attempt. The bird flew off north towards the New Rother/ Catcliffe Flash area at
1928 hrs. This may be the first (confirmed) Osprey at Treeton Dyke since 1961.
Also present: Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, Cuckoo, Swift
and Grasshopper Warbler.

Thursday 17th April 2003
A few extra birds on the Dyke not present yesterday: 9 Great Crested
Grebe and 15 Tufted Duck which were probably from Catcliffe Flash
where the new Tern raft was being installed. A flock of c.100 Linnet on
the Hillyfields to the NE of the Dyke was unusual these days [RJC]. In addition:
4 Yellow Wagtails in the paddock fields and 2 Grasshopper Warblers
on the Tip. [C.Corbidge].
Wednesday 16th April 2003
Small flocks of Meadow Pipit and Pied Wagtail, plus one
Grasshopper Warbler on the tip and at least 36 Fieldfares.
Tuesday 15th April 2003 [P.Wragg]
As well as dozens of Willow Warblers this evening: one Swallow and
a reeling Grasshopper Warbler, plus c.50 Fieldfares still present.
