Apart from the more built-up areas of Sheffield, Whinchats  can be seen in many locations across the recording area in suitable habitat. Although their prime habitat is heath and moorland, they can also be found on scrub and waste areas in the east of the area. They are a migratory species with the main arrival in May and most departing during September. The highest breeding densities are in places like The Eastern Moors Estates in Derbyshire and the Strines / Midhope / Ewden moorlands in Yorkshire. But you don't need to walk the moors to see them, they can be easily seen from the roadside, especially in spring and early summer when they will be singing from their exposed song perches. For specific walks, try a stroll along the top edge of Longshaw Park or down the path through Blacka Moor. These photographs of the same male were taken by Richard Hill at Redmires on 22nd June 2001. Last updated 1st July 2001.
