White-winged Black Tern

At the time of writing there have been only three records of White-winged Black Tern in the SBSG area. This is a small freshwater "marsh tern" and can be easily confused with Back Tern in most plumages. All three records involved 'immature' birds between late august and mid-October. The first was one reported as "an immature" at Elsecar Reservoir on 18th September 1966. There were no more until a juvenile was found at Barbrook Res on 29th August 1997. This bird stayed only very briefly, from the single observer finding it at 0615h until 0700h. Fortunately the third individual was slightly more obliging. A first-winter at RVCP on 20th October 2001, did at least hang around from mid-morning to dusk. Although it was gone next morning, at least most of the Sheffield listers were able to catch up with this one. This record shot of the first-winter bird at RVCP was taken by Carl Corbidge. Last updated 2nd December 2001.
