One of the more scarce waders in the Sheffield area, is Wood Sandpiper. An average of only two or three per year are reported, with none recorded in three of the years between 1985 and 2001. Most occur as singles, with occasional reports of two together. A few are seen in May, but most occur between July and September. Over the years they have been recorded at numerous localities, especially in the east of the area, but also at upland waters such as Middleton Moor and Redmires. For further information see "A Review of the Rare and Scarce Waders in the Sheffield Area, 1985-1987", Slack and Morris, [Birds in the Sheffield Area, 1997]. This juvenile, photographed by Mark Reeder at RVCP, was present on 26th and 27th July 2001 and was joined by an adult on 27th. Further photographs can be seen on the RVCP web pages. Last updated 8th July 2001.
