Woodpigeon

Woodpigeons migrating south at Redmires, November 2001

It is not so long ago that there was a certain amount of controversy over whether Woodpigeons migrate. Visible Migration watchers in the South Pennines often recorded the species moving south in quiet large concentrations during October and November, indicating that there must be some sort of short-distance movement at the very least. In autumn 2000, almost 53,000 moved through Rod Moor and Redmires during the first ten days of November, with an autumn total of almost 93,000, all moving south in the first few hours of daylight. And in 1999 the numbers were even higher, with over 79,000 in that same ten day period and a total of almost 105,000 during the autumn. This spectacle can be observed annually in varying numbers, from Rod Moor, Redmires or Ox Stones, and presumably other sites further south, with more or less the same birds moving through at each site. This photograph of southerly moving birds was taken at Redmires by Richard Hill on 4th November 2001. Last updated 18th November 2001.
