Yellow-legged Gull - adult

Adult Yellow-legged Gull at Poolsbrook CP, November 2000 - Ashley Fisher
Photograph Copyright © 2000 Ashley Fisher.

This adult winter Yellow-legged Gull Larus [cachinnans] michahellis was photographed by Ashley Fisher at Poolsbrook CP on 30th November 2000. In comparison with the adult Herring Gull, note especially the virtually pure white head with flattish crown, extensive black primaries with small white 'mirrors', the heavy bill with more extensive red spot, and the small dark eye with [just about visible on this shot] dark [red-orange] iris. N.B. the light conditions gave the mantles of both of these birds a rather dark appearance in this photograph. Another record shot [below] of an adult at Shirecliffe Tip was taken in brighter [allthough not perfect] light conditions but shows the mantle colour more accurately. This shoot was taken by Martin Garner on 17th October 2003. Last updated 18th January 2004.
