The Peregrine Falcon, an apex predator, is commonly thought to be the fastest animal on the planet.
Just 50 years ago, the species came close to extinction in England. And yet, remarkably, since 2012 this icon of the animal kingdom has been breeding and thriving right in the heart of our city, available for all to see and admire, courtesy of partnership between the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Bird Study Group.
Chris Greenwood and David Wood tell the story of how the birds came to the city and share the ups and downs of their daily lives here. The opportunity to watch a once elusive species so closely has led to new insight and unexpected scientific discovery. Using studies from across the UK, Chris and David will delve into the fascinating biology which enables Peregrines to live their lives in the fast lane and discuss how this has allowed them to adapt successfully to a new urban lifestyle.
